If you work away from home, you may want to consider keeping a Get-Home-Bag (GHB) at your workplace or in your car (or both). A GHB at a minimum should contain food and water, a water purification method (filter or tablets), lighter and/or waterproof matches, firestarter, a basic first aid kit, a multitool (Leatherman or similar), wind-up flashlight, radio (am/fm/weather, a small handheld shortwave radio wouldn’t hurt either), space blanket, large garbage bags, paracord, travel sewing kit, duct tape and work gloves. My kit also contains a change of clothes and toiletries (hand sanitizer, toothbrush/paste, sunscreen, wet wipes, chapstick) and pain medication (advil, alleve), as well as feminine hygiene supplies.
My GHB food is pretty basic - in addition to bottled water and a sport bottle water filter, it includes an assortment of granola bars, crackers and cookies, plus tinned meat (tuna, vienna sausages, salmon, chicken), instant oatmeal, ramen, EmergenC, Tru-Lime and Crystal light (water flavoring), instant coffee, bouillion cubes, fruit rollups, Jelly Bellies, Lifesavers, 12 pk Survival Tabs and a datapak MRE bar.
