Food Storage

Whether you're anticipating a long term survival situation or a shorter term issue, having shelf stable foods on hand is just a good idea.  Some good ideas for shelf stable foods include:

  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Peanut butter
  • Jam

The cardinal rule of food storage is STORE WHAT YOU EAT, EAT WHAT YOU STORE. By doing this, you will not only be able to rotate through your storage foods to keep them fresh but also avoid issues with dietary upset when you change your diet to eating your storage foods.

Where to find food

Dollar Tree has some excellent deals on spices, pasta and also hygiene and first aid supplies (I know, it's not food but it is a good idea to also stock up on personal hygiene and first aid supplies to last your family at least a year). Some of the items I purchase from my local dollar store include:

  • Pasta (1 1/2 lbs of spaghetti, macaroni, penne)
  • Spices, including black peppercorns, minced garlic, cayenne
  • BBQ sauce
  • Canned gravy
  • Mushrooms
  • Jalapeno pepper rings
  • Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Toothbrushes/toothpaste/deodorant
  • Soap/shampoo/hand sanitizer

Specialty items:

  • Gnocci
  • Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Himalayan salt

You can find some mid-to-long-term pantry items on Amazon, including powdered milk  for
